Bag Worms Moth. They are black furry clear-winged moths that have a one inch wingspan. The pests hang out in their bags until late summer or early fall when the adult males emerge to mate.
Inside the bag the caterpillar transforms to the moth stage. The caterpillarsare from small to large size. The female lives a couple of weeks while the male lives only one to two days Rhainds et al.
They are easiest to identify by the bags they construct as they feed.
After the bagworm eggs hatch the larvae start spinning a silk strand that dangles down from the pouch. At this time they will seal up their bags and pupate into moths. Some larvae are transported to trees plants and shrubs that are close by via the wind. The bag is brown to greyish often covered with fragments of vegetation and so tough it cannot be torn open easily.
