King Anawrahta also known as Anawrahtaminsaw Anoratha or Aniruddha reigned between 1044 1077 AD he was the first of a succession of kings who ruled the northern part of Burma from the 1st century AD and the first to unify upper and lower Burma. Bagan is a plain in the middle of Myanmar covering a tract of country measuring about 16 square miles along the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy. Not only did he greatly expand the Pagan Kingdom but he also implemented a series of political and administrative reforms that enabled his empire to dominate the Irrawaddy valley and its periphery for another 250 years.
